SNOW-MG!

Since our front yard looked like this this morning, I knew the skiing was going to be deep.

I headed to Heavenly to take a few long sidecountry laps before settling in to do some work in the afternoon.  The 1st run was deep untracked snow followed by some jailbreak-esque shenanigans when we got to the road.

Happy Hour Skiing

When Daylight Savings rolls around we trade dawn patrols for happy hour skiing.  The extra hour of light after work makes it a fun thing to look forward to.  When the first happy hour came on Monday, March 14th, the weather didn’t really feel like cooperating.  At lake level it was pouring rain.  Intrepid, this all girls team was going skiing!  We optimistically voiced “it will be snowing at the pass.”  Well, it was still raining!  HA!  So, we starting hiking anyway thinking that it would at least be snow up top and as soon as we started skinning, the rain turned to snain, then snow!  The ski down wasn’t amazing, but it was much faster snow than we expected.  We had a great time rocking out up top to our favorite artist Rihanna and splitting one Mike’s Hard Limeade…  just to make sure everyone knows we are girls.

Self induced blogging hiatus

I had to put myself on a GoPro and blogging hiatus to get some work done.  Then it snowed a lot and I skied a lot and I still didn’t get the work done.  But as of last night… the work is done!  I’ll get some updates up soon, but until then check out this video from a super beautiful day in the backcountry a few weeks ago with great friends and variable snow conditions.

Grumps McGrumps, P.G.

The beginning of this week has been a series of disappointments, including being outbid on a house (that we really liked) for the 4th time.  Combined with the lost hour of sleep and the rainy weather, I’ve been pretty grumpy.  When I’m sad, it always helps me to write things down that I am looking forward to, so here they are for everyone to see:

1)      The Irish holiday, St. Patricks Day this Thursday – talked about in a previous post.

2)      Hitting the bag jump at Boreal on Friday!  http://rideboreal.com/winter/mountain_info/bagjump/

Finally a chance to get my backflips dialed safely!

3)      Skiing at Sugar Bowl for the 1st time since 2002 on Saturday through Disabled Sports USA Ski for All! http://www.dsusafw.org/

4)      The Legendary Kirkwood Banked Slalom!

5)      Telegrass at Sierra At Tahoe next weekend! http://www.sierraattahoe.com/event/8th-annual-telegrass-festival

6)      The Twisted Sister Freeride Competition at Kirkwood April 1-2 http://www.kirkwood.com/site/events/4frnts-twisted-sisters

7)      Heading back east to meet my niece and see one of my best and oldest friends get married while hanging out with my best and oldest friends and family!  And staying at this place in Brooklyn: http://www.nuhotelbrooklyn.com/

8)      So much more, but I don’t want to give too much away!

Excited!

It is raining in Tahoe and we skied some serious Sierra Cement during the first post-work backcountry run this year – affectionately called Happy Hour due to the extra hour we get from Daylight Savings.  I may put together a funny movie from that run, but what I’m most excited for this week is the airing of my friend Andy’s appearance on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” this Thursday!  Here is a link to the Facebook advertisement/video: http://on.fb.me/hYxkuD.  It is going to be AHHHHH-MAZING!

Kirkwood Sidecountry

Saturday was a glorious bluebird day in the Sierra and so we wanted to get out and ski some BC.  I was interested in skiing some of the lift-assisted “sidecountry” at Kirkwood and I was pumped that my friend Brian was also game to check it out.  After a few runs to warm up the legs, we headed out to Thunder Bowl.

Brian with Thunder Bowl in the background.  Only a few sets of tracks!

The snow was so good in Thunder Bowl that we almost went back, but we opted for a run out in Emigrant Basin instead since Brian had never skied it.  California chutes is a Kirkwood classic sidecountry run and since the snow was feeling good on most aspects, it seemed like a great time to hit it.  The snow was a little more variable than Thunder Bowl and there were a lot more people out there but it was still super fun!  Probably the best snow I’ve skied that thing in!

The prominent chute is Cali Chute as viewed from Vista:

I was nerding it up with my GoPro and backpack on the lift but I got some great footage.

More skiing in beautiful Lake Tahoe

The snow was really good on Thursday at Kirkwood, so I was motivated to get out again before work on Friday.  We met at 5:30 AM and hiked up Jake’s Peak.  We were surprised to see how few people had skied Jakes since it is one of the more popular BC hikes in Tahoe.

Beautiful view in the early morning light

Steep skin per usual

View from the top at 7 AM

The skiing was, well, amazing.  Both of us felt it was the best snow we’ve ever skied Jakes in.  The Tahoe “hero snow” from the day before had dried out with the cold temps overnight and skied like a foot of fluff!  We really only crossed each other’s tracks and we found a really fun kicker.  Here is the POV:

Photos from Alpine Comp

Here are some cool photos from the final day of the Alpine Meadows Comp (photo credit to Sylas Wright of the Sierra Sun)…

Also, the snow is really good in Tahoe right now.  Yesterday I had one of my top 5 days this year at Kirkwood.  The snow was perfect “hero snow” and the crowds were light!  I skied 14 runs before I took off to get to work for a 2pm conference call.  I forgot my GoPro, so no footage from yesterday.  This morning I skied Jake’s and the snow was even better than yesterday!  More on that later.
