Early Season Colorado Ski Trip

Though we had a fabulous fall, I could hear winter knocking at the door. Reports of early snow storms only make skiers antsy – though we know that the best skiing is still months away. Last year, PK and I took an early season ski trip to Colorado and it was an excellent antidote for the November skiing blues. It was so successful in relieving anticipation, I decided to do it again this year and hit up Woodward at Copper to practice some backflips with actual skis on.

Thursday night was spent in Denver reminiscing with some childhood friends. It was amazing to see them and learn about Astis Mittens, a company started by one of their Denver friends. We also had a few good laughs about the fact that I had a highlight video which I showed to everyone on the big screen in their amazing loft apartment.

I told everyone to get to work on their highlight videos and headed up to the mountains the next day.

My sister and I got to A-Basin in time to make about 6 runs before we had to bust a move for our drop in session at Woodward. We met some friends who are also ripping skiers and went nuts right away throwing 360s and backflips into the foam pits. Everyone had trepidation before their first drop, but it was all erased with the effortless jump and then landing into the foam pits. I tried about 8 backflips and had only 3 good ones.

To take a break from backflipping I headed over to the cliff and threw a front flip into the foam. My skis hit the foam, I compressed, and I kneed myself in the mouth and absolutely shredded my lip. Ten stitches later, I looked like this.

foam to ski --> knee to lip --> Meg to ER

Not to be discouraged, we skied the next morning at ABasin again.

still jumping

When the crowds arrived, we bailed for some lunch and to find a full face helmet to I could return to Woodward. Bam! Got a Giro Full Face! I think this will really help me down the road! My sister and I headed back to Woodward and threw ourselves into foam until we were exhausted.

Sometimes the hardest part was getting out of the foam as evidenced here.

After one more morning of skiing, this time at Keystone, we headed back to Denver to spend more time with awesome non-skiing friends and catch my flight back to Tahoe. I got plenty of looks when I boarded the plane with my fat lip and my full face helmet carry on. This morning when I arrived to work a coworker told me I was like a 10 year old with a different injury every two weeks. Brutally fun weekend!

Snow and bikes

I got 3 runs in last week. It’s a little sketchy trying to ski in the first snow when it is still fresh, but cautious skiing and big skis make it fun.

By Sunday, we were hoping for tacky biking and fall aspen vistas, so we headed to the iconic flume trail. It was a little more snowy than tacky in some areas and the aspens were still green, but it was beautiful per usual.

Welcome Winter 2011-2012

It’s back!  Winter!  Just as I was swimming in the lake, enjoying the 80 degree temperatures of the unseasonably warm fall, reports of a winter storm started hitting all the major weather outlets.  Although, I’m scrambling to get a construction project done before winter, I couldn’t help but be a little excited to see what this early-October snow storm would bring.  As I drove home from the job site last night, I could see the clouds rolling in.

The next morning I awoke to rain at 6600 feet, but it turned to snow around 7:30 AM.  The excitement was growing.  I jumped in my car and headed up the east shore of Lake Tahoe to the construction site.  The sights were beautiful.

rough "seas" and snowy mountains

this doesn't even look real!

The snow halted the construction project so I decided to see what I could find in the backcountry. I headed up Mt. Rose highway, which at almost 9,000 feet, is the highest year round pass in the Sierras.  It felt good to be skinning again.

back in the bc

Like many Sierra storms, there was a lot of wind with this snow, which made it perfectly supportive for it’s 10″ depth.

Reno is down there somewhere

Despite the shallow snow depth, these turns felt great for October 5th.

Ski with Caution!

The “good” weather is supposed to return, but it was nice to get a taste of the upcoming winter.  Welcome back La Nina!

We bought a house!

We finally bought our very own house.  We are pretty pumped!  But we are super busy moving and so I haven’t been posting.  Here are some photos.

In other news, it is fall in Tahoe and it is awesome!  Why, because there is way less people around, although the construction is not making driving any easier.  Yesterday my work obligations ended a bit early, I went for a nice long paddleboard on the calmest water and then did a few backflips off the dock.  It is nice to get a few more swims in before the snow flies.

Otherwise this fall, I’ve been kayaking on the South Fork of the American:

Mountain biking, attending trail work days, and drinking beer in my bike helmet.

And working on my backflips on the trampoline and into the water in preparation for ski season.

Labor Day Weekend on the Rogue River

I tell you what, the Rogue River sure is purty.  Yeah, we pretty much talked like rednecks the entire weekend while rafting/kayaking the Rogue River in Oregon.  It all started with the phrase, “I tell you what!” and just exploded like a whale on the Oregon coast from there.  I’ve actually had a hard time transitioning back to normal speech since and have almost had to counteract this vernacular by speaking like a California Valley Girl.  Anyway, here is what went down:

5 people, 4 boats, group gear for 14 in Walt the truck

Kayak crew!

contemplating options through Rainey Falls

Brad, Nelly, Craig navigating Tater the boat through raft chute

Greg gittin' sum!

Did not win

Well, I was 99% sure I was going to win the Mike’s Hard Sports Contest, but I didn’t.  I think I win some sort of prize because I made it to the finals.  I had fun making the video and I hope you had fun watching it.  I hope to continute to make more videos, but I think I’ll change my beverage of choice to either Bud Light Lime or La Croix sparkling water.

Already getting started!

Mike’s Hard Backcountry Skiing

Today is the day I’ve been waiting for… for the past month! Will I be crowned champion of the “Mike’s Hard Sports” Contest?  Will the sponsorship deal I’ve been talking about come through?  Will I be able to update the Sponsors section of this blog?  Will I be $10k richer (or more accurately have $10k less debt)?  So, if you’re reading this, your votes could make or break this scenario.  Go to Facebook and vote!  If you don’t have a page, sign your dog up… he/she will not mind!  Just for today!  DO IT!  Do it for me, do if for your country, do it for yourself!

https://www.facebook.com/mikeshardlemonade?sk=app_179970532057634&app_data=41%2C21

And, I’ll definitely buy you a Mike’s (or something better) the next time I see you.

EDIT: So I don’t actually find out today… but Friday, if I made the finals… and it is looking GOOD!  Top 10 all the way at the end of voting.  So apparently the next step is Friday, the finalists are announced and then the Mike’s people take the next few weeks to judge and choose a winner based on:

“humor (how funny a video is), determination (the level of dedication of the athlete(s)), hustle (the amount of effort exhibited by the athlete(s)), originality, and “mike’s spirit®” (how closely the athlete(s) align with Sponsor’s brand values). ”

I think I have a good shot!  What do you guys think?

Angora Lakes Triathlon Recap

Four super awesome women showed up to compete in the 1st Annual Angora Lakes Triathlon on Saturday, August 6th. I am super grateful to our one amazing volunteer Sarah who cheered us on, timed us, and helped us transition.  The best part was that everyone rolled in to the finish laughing and saying how much fun they had.  Some people said they wanted to do this race every weekend.  It was that much fun.  So mark your calenders for the 1st weekend in August, 2012, 2013, and so on.

Photo recap:

VOTE FOR ME!!!!

Alright everyone, this is the moment many of us have been waiting for – I have finally compiled some footage and submitted a video to Mike’s Hard Lemonade for a contest on Facebook called Mike’s Hard Sports.  Some of you may know about my impromptu Mike’s Hard commercials out on the mountain or the river and how I claim to be “sponsored” by Mike’s.  I believe this started back in 2008 during a summer ski trip to Sonora Pass.  Though I cannot locate photos from that trip, here are some dating back to 2009 of different Mike’s sponsorship exploits:

harder

A few weeks ago, my friend Britta told me about this contest and it was go time… I mean if I didn’t enter, I literally could never joke about being sponsored by Mike’s again.  I mean, would anything I said hold meaning? So… here is my submission.

THE IMPORTANT STUFF: Go here to vote for me daily on Facebook.

You might need to sign up and “like” Mike’s Hard Lemonade.  Man up.  If people make fun of you, make fun of them or make more fun of yourself… that is what I always do.  Tell all your friends.  You won’t regret it!  THANKS EVERYONE!

VOTE DAILY FROM AUGUST 17-30.  If this wasn’t so important, there would be way less capital letters.

Crisis in Somalia

When I posted a few days ago about my high school trip to Kenya, I literally had no idea that there was an ongoing famine in East Africa. A year-long drought has destroyed crops and is putting 12 million people at risk of starvation. Hundreds of thousands of children may die in Somalia if they do not received immediate aid – which is especially hard to deliver because of conflict in the region. How did I not know about this until yesterday? Because our media is inundated with reports of political spats, debt ceiling crises, and Wall Street turbulence. The Dow plunging is not a disaster – a famine where hundreds of thousands may die is a disaster.  This song makes me think about situations like this a lot – especially living in Tahoe which is close to paradise.

Thank you to Jill Biden for drawing attention to this crisis.

How can we help?  I don’t know, it is hard.  I’m concerned about our country’s discourse, but I hope we band together, show compassion and help these people.  One thing you can do is make an immediate $10 donation to help Oxfam America fight against the crisis and save lives by texting “OXFAM” to 25383.  Another thing you can do is sign this petition to get the UN involved.
