SheJumps SUP Yoga on Lake Tahoe

We met just before 8 AM at the newly renovated El Dorado Beach on Tahoe’s South Shore. The water was glassy, which was a good thing, because we were heading out to try yoga on stand up paddleboards. The beach was bustling with other people renting boards from South Tahoe Standup, which is conveniently located in an immaculate new boathouse right on the beach. Eight women headed out on boards under the guidance of our teacher, Jenay from Svadhyaya Yoga. For most it was the first time doing yoga on a stand up paddleboard or SUP, as people call it for short. And for some, it was the first time on a SUP ever. The lake is stunning at this hour. You can see every detail on the bottom and all the way across the lake. We are enveloped in blue.

Heading out to try our hands and heads at SUP Yoga

We paddled a bit getting used to our boards which would serve as our “mats” for the next hour and a half. Jenay then lead us through an hour-long yoga practice. Poses that were easy for me in the yoga studio were incredibly challenging. At the end of the class, we took some time to try out crow, headstand, and other balance poses. When all my balancing muscles were exhausted, I simply fell in the lake which was the perfect cushion and temperature.

It was an amazing way to spend a morning and definitely introduces both new challenges and beauty into yoga. And thanks to Svadhyaya Yoga and all the amazing participants, we were able to raise some funds for SheJumps to continue initiating awe-inspiring programs!

Angora Lakes Triathlon Recap

Every year, on the 1st Saturday in August, Tahoe locals get together to compete in the unofficial Annual Angora Lakes Triathlon. The weather is always perfect and Angora Lakes is the perfect temperature for swimming. The route is always the same, a scenic 6 mile bike ride from Kiva Beach up Angora Ridge Road to the Angora Lakes parking lot, followed by a steep mile run up to Angora Lakes, where we then jump into the lake just as we’re getting too hot, and swim across to a 20 foot cliff, jumping off, and then do it all over again on the way back. Except that it is WAY easier since it is downhill!

The climb is a lung buster, but the meadows filled with wildflowers and flanked with aspens and stunning vistas can make you forget about your aching legs and rapid heartbeat. We call it a race, because it’s pretty fun to compete against your friends… but the only reward is pride and the only goal is fun. Mission accomplished again. We’re even thinking of more “fake” triathlons we can do in Lake Tahoe. We’ve decided the opportunities are endless.

FOUND (1 of) MY GOPRO(s)!

I have a penchant for losing things. Just this past weekend I lost my wallet by leaving it in a cab in Chicago. I even had to fly back to Tahoe without an ID. Monday morning I went to work and sure enough received a call that my wallet had been found and is currently on its way back.

Last summer I lost my 1st GoPro kayaking the McCloud River and decided that I deserved another one. So GoPro #2 was ready for winter, but winter took its sweet time getting here. Fast forward to mid-February – conditions were rocky, yet amazing at Kirkwood. It was mid-week, empty, and I was skiing with one of my favorite ski buddies, Stu. We were having a great time, high speed powder turns, cliff drops, near misses with rocks – I was pretty happy to be both living and recording it. We hit a line in Eagle Bowl and the middle drop had a flat landing that usually fills in better with more snow. We both somersaulted out of it and my Go Pro broke right off my helmet and into the snow. We hastily looked for 5 minutes, but there was powder to be skied, so we agreed to come back at the end of the day with avalanche shovels and dig for it. After 30 minutes and no sign of it, we resigned to come back when the snow melted.

I was busy this summer, so I finally made the trek out to Kirkwood yesterday. I hiked the 45 minutes up to where I thought I had lost it and it was sitting right there, amongst the lupine! After downloading the footage, it turns out the day was as great as I remembered it!

Beautiful morning out at Kirkwood, made even better by the recovery of my GoPro!

Five Highlights of our Ridiculously Awesome Grand Canyon Trip

I just got back from 16 amazing days on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with 15 awesome people… 16 days of no computers or phones, being outside constantly, spending 90% of the day in a bikini, sleeping under the stars, theme nights, challenging rapids, beautiful hikes, triple digit weather, funny accents, stunning vistas, and daily swims in both the Colorado and its side creeks. I also tripled my kayaking ability – even if my roll is still suspect.

Whitewater kayaking has been a frustrating sport for me. Unlike skiing, one can’t really practice on their own… so 16 days of kayaking was just what I needed catch the bug again. Plus, the big water of the Canyon was exhilarating and tricky, but low consequence, so a perfect practice venue. In addition to the rapids, there were so many highlights, so I’m choosing just five for now…

Floating down the Little C with my peeps!

Clean run down Hermit Rapid at nearly 20,000 cfs after seeing group before us flip a raft!

This loop hike to Bass Camp and the fabulous lighting

The loop hike to Thunder River and Deer Creek, including the THRONE ROOM!

Hanging out under Beaver Falls on Havasu Creek

So, sign up for the lottery next February and if you have an extra spot, consider me! I am so grateful for the last three weeks and cannot wait to get back there!!!

Summer Fun!

Summer has been super busy so far! And starting tomorrow, I’m off to boat the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon for the next 3 weeks.

Summer is wedding season so I’ve spent almost every weekend in June attending a wedding or bachelorette parties. Luckily, my friends got married in beautiful Todos Santos, Mexico and so PK and I, having never been to Mexico, made a little vacation out of it.

The perfect and beautiful couple in an equally stunning location

Rooftop cocktails at the Villa Santa Cruz

The next weekend was dueling bachelorette parties in Sonoma and both were a lot of fun.

Bachelorette Party 1

Bachelorette Party 2

This past weekend was a hike up into Desolation Wilderness – it was great to spend a weekend at home.

Bachelorette Party 3 – hiking in beautiful Lake Tahoe

Oh yeah, and we went to prom, my friend’s brilliantly orchestrated birthday party with at least 200 of Tahoe’s best, wearing their interpretation of prom outfits (or what they could find at a thrift store).

Prom! Hadn’t done that for a while!

And with that, I’m off-line for three weeks!

10th Anniversary of Riding Bikes from Yellowstone to Alaska

On June 23, 2002, my friend Tim and I set out on the adventure of a lifetime – we pedaled out of Yellowstone National Park on our bicycles to make our way some 3,000 miles over the course of 50 days to Anchorage, Alaska.

Heading out of Yellowstone National Park

Fresh out of college and a little dissapointed with the lack of adventure real world jobs in my field seemed to hold, I decided I needed to do something bigger. Tim, who was my coworker and one of my best friends in San Francisco at the time, was a willing partner. By an act of pure fate, I met Detroit-area philanthropist in a bike shop in my hometown who interviewed me on the spot and offered to give us a grant to pay for the entire trip! Thanks Beth!

Earlier that year, a friend and mentor of mine had just sent me the following Goethe quote and it never seemed more true.

What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it; Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

So we set off on June 23, 2002, ready to explore. We saw countless bears, moose, and eagles along the way; met some characters; and slowly traveled through some of the most beautiful places in North America. Along the way I learned many lessons, but the most memorable were from my travelling companion Tim. He taught me how to cook and laugh at both adversity and assholes. We still practice those skills today and are lucky enough to have adventures each year! It really is the incredible people I’ve met that have made my life so amazing. Gratitude.

Our route from Yellowstone to Alaska – we crossed the continental divide 5 times!

At the top of the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park

The AlCan Hwy was pretty dusty at times!

We made it!!!
